6 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SALICYLATES

1. WHAT ARE SALICYLATES?
Salicylates are chemicals that occur naturally in many plants and
also in medications (e.g. aspirin), plastics, pesticides, industrial
chemicals, fragrances and perfumed products. They are natural
pesticides that help protect plants against insects and disease.
2. HOW DO THEY AFFECT PEOPLE?
Some people can be affected by salicylates when they eat or inhale
certain foods or chemicals. Symptoms include:
** Headache
** Migraines
** Itchy skin, rashes, hives, eczema
** Irritable bowel symptoms (reflux, nauseas, vomiting, stomach
bloating or discomfort, wind, diarrhoea, constipation)
** Asthma, runny nose, stuffy nose, nasal polyps
** Irritability, restlessness, inattention, oppositional defiance,
ADHD symptoms
** Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling asleep, night terrors,
frequent waking, sleep apnoea)
** Anxiety, depression, panic attacks
** Rapid heart beats and arrhythmias
** Tinnitus, hearing loss
** Joint pain, arthritis
3. WHO IS MOST AFFECTED BY SALICYLATES?
A sensitivity to salicylates is remarkably common and often goes
diagnosed or recognized.
Up to:
** 20% of adults with asthma;
** 60% of people with food induced itchy rashes; headaches and
migraines;
** 70% of people with irritable bowel symptoms; and
** 75% of children with behavioural problems
may have sensitivities to salicylates.
4. WHERE CAN YOU FIND SALICYLATES?
** The highest levels of salicylates can be found in unripe fruit and
just under the skin or fruits, raw foods, dried foods and juices.
** Common foods and products that contain salicylates are:
** Berries
** Citrus
** Melons
** Stone fruit (esp plums)
** Grapes
** Dried fruit (e.g. sultanas)
** Tomatoes
** Avocados
** Broccoli
** Silverbeet
** Jams
** Sauces (e.g. tomato sauce)
** Juices (e.g. orange juice)
** Fruit flavoured yoghurts
** Artificially perfumed products
** Medications such as Aspirin, Dencorub, Vaporub, teething
gels, acne cleansers and wipes, Nurofen and antiinflammatory
drugs (non-steroidal)
** Also found in sweets, toothpaste and chewing gum
